Visiting Bealach na Ba

The Bealach na Ba is a historic and quite famous pass through the mountains of the Applecross peninsula. Bealach na Ba, meaning pass of the cattle, was used in earlier times to drive cattle from Applecross and surrounding settlements to other parts of the Highlands. The road is similar to the great mountain passes in the Alps with hairpin bends, especially coming from the east side, Speeds faster than 30 mph are rarely permitted.

There are very tight hairpin bends which switch back and forth up the hillside, with gradients approaching 20%.
This twisting, single-track mountain road is the third highest road in Scotland rising up to 626 metres (2,054 ft) above the sea level.

The road is dangerous because: very narrow, sharp bends, steep gradients and lacks places to pass, there are several passing places, to stop when a vehicle comes from the opposite direction.
Be aware the warning sign that says that this road is not suitable for learner drivers, caravans and very large vehicles.
Another problem on this road, is to keeping your eyes focussed on the road and not on the breathtaking scenery, always pull over but not obstructing the road
The road is usually open all year, but during winter months, it can be closed when the access has not been cleared of snow, There are snow gates at either end, with winter closures lasting weeks.
