The birch woodlands of Craigellachie National Nature Reserve (NNR), just a short drive from Aviemore, are located above the A9. Birch woodland, open glades, tree-fringed lochs, and hills leading to a rocky top are all features of the reserve. You may get fantastic views of the Cairngorms from the highest vantage point.

Any time of year is a great time to go for a walk here. The perpetual bug activity and bird music accompany the silver birch trees in the spring and summer. A characteristic of the area is the common buzzards' high-pitched mewing. Hopefully, you'll catch a glimpse of them gliding above the forest.

Several pathways crisscross the reserve. Pick one of the four routes, and take in the quiet and seclusion.

The exhibits and peregrine viewing camera in the youth hostel near to the reserve are also open to you.
