Explore Kisimul Castle this picturesque mediaeval fortification, built on a rocky islet at the entrance to Castle Bay, Island of Barra, goes by the Gaelic name Caisteal Chiosmuil, which roughly translates as "castle of the rock of the small bay." The Macneil chief of Barra lived in Kisimul.
The clan leader Gilleonan Macneil was awarded Barra by Lord Alexander MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, in 1427, while tradition claims the first Macneils arrived in the 11th century. Perhaps, he was responsible for constructing Kisimul on the island's rocky terrain, complete with a tiny crew house adjacent to the castle to house his private crew and galley.
