Burghclere Visitors Hospitality Guide

Burghclere, in the lovely county of Hampshire, is an excellent base for visitors wishing to enjoy and explore Burghclere and its surrounding area, which offers excellent lodgings ranging from fine hotels to basic bed and breakfast establishments, as well as some wonderful local hospitality, so whatever type of accommodation you require, you will find it in and around Burghclere.

Burghclere is a town in Hampshire. Apart from the surrounding scenery, the Sandham Memorial Chapel is the village's main attraction. It was built in 1926 by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Behrend to remember a relative who died in the First World War. It now belongs to the National Trust, and keys can be obtained from neighbouring almshouses. It is adorned with paintings by Stanley Spencer, who was influenced immensely by his experiences as a Red Cross orderly and then as a soldier in World War I.

The 19 photographs depict the mundane, rather than the heroic, life of a soldier during wartime. A massive Resurrection stands at the east end, with a strew of wooden crosses in the foreground, each one handed in by a soldier.
A climb to Beacon Hill, a historic Iron Age settlement at 858 feet near the hamlet, provides spectacular views of the countryside. The Chase, located three miles south of Newbury on Woolton Hill, belongs to the National Trust, and approximately 130 acres of property, including forests and a stream, have been designated as a nature reserve.
