The Glen of Feshie visitors guide

The Glen of Feshie leading deep into the hills from Spayside towards Deeside is much gentler than the Lairig Ghur, The RAF Highland Activities centre is based at the Feshiebridge Lodge nestled in the heart of the Cairngorm National Park just 8 miles from Aviemore.

It is situated amidst stunning scenery close to Loch Insh, the small village of Kincraig and is a superb base for adventurous training activities. The area is ideally situated for mountain walking, rock climbing, mountain biking, sailing (on Loch Insh/Loch Morlich), canoeing and pony trekking. The Cairngorm gliding Club is only a mile away and golfers are welcome at all the local courses. Clay Pigeon shooting is available at the nearby Rothiemurcus Estate. Feshiebridge is accessible by coach or train to Aviemore, flying to Inverness or by car via the A9, only 2 hours from Edinburgh, this fine Highland countryside..

There is a long history here regarding General Wade and the Glen Feshie road this may well have been the one that got away. He was proud of the 300 miles of military road that he built across the Highlands, but there was one which he surveyed in vain. Precise details are not known, but references to its survey are known, even though it never progressed to being costed, let alone put forward to Parliament for approval.

The road was designed to link the main road north to Inverness with the barracks at Braemar Castle, by turning off in the vicinity of Ruthven Barracks and following Glen Feshie south, then east to the Geldie Burn which flows into the River Dee, and so Braemar. Today both ends are public roads, and much of the intervening route can be followed on a mountain bike, with just a few miles across the watershed only being suitable for walking.
