This ferry across the Dornoch Firth from a long spit of land 5 miles north west of Tain to a point 4 miles south west of Dornoch was 1.5 miles long now discontinued it was once a very dangerous crossing but was the only link with the north until the building in 1812 of Bonar bridge the need for this was stressed by an accident in 1809 when an overloaded ferry boat was swamped and over 100 people drowned.
