Today, visitors have the opportunity to travel back in time to 1816 and follow in Jane Austen's footsteps by touring her childhood home and garden, gaining knowledge about her life and the times in which she lived, and getting up close and personal with items from the museum's unparalleled Jane Austen collection. These items include Jane's letters, jewellery, and the tiny table where she wrote her beloved novels.

Jane resided for the final eight years of her life in the house that is now commonly referred to as "Jane Austen's House." She, her mother, her sister Cassandra, and her friend Martha Lloyd moved here in 1809, having previously spent some time living in temporary quarters with various people. Edward, Jane's brother, was the ecstatic new owner of the mansion after being named the successor to the wealthy Knight family, which owned the expansive Chawton Estate. He had been the recipient of the Knight family's blessings for many years. The free use of the mansion, which was built in the 17th century, was provided to the women as a rental incentive.

In May of 1817, Jane Austen was ill and had to seek medical treatment, so she left the village to go to Winchester. Two months later, on July 18, 1817, she passed away from her illness. The residence was still occupied by Jane's parents and her sister on a permanent basis. In 1845, in order to meet the accommodation needs of the employees who worked on the Chawton estate, the main house was subdivided into three apartments. It remained that way until 1947, when it was eventually put up for sale.
