Visiting Ardvreck Castle
ARDVRECK CASTLE This ruined castle built about 1591, standing on a rocky peninsula thrusting into Loch Assynt, Along the A837 north from Inchnadamph. Today all that is left is the reains of a tower that was tree stories high, a tower house it was the seat of the MacLeods of Assynt, who owned this district, Here James Graham, Marquees of Montrose, was captured after he had lost the Battle of Carbisdale.
It is said that Montrose, exhausted and hungry, threw himself on MacLeod's mercy. MacLeod accepted him and entertained him with kindness. There was a bounty on Montrose head, blood money to the extent of £25,000, it is said, Greed overcame the Highland chief, he kept Montrose in comfort while he sent news of his presence to the authorities, Montrose was captured and taken to Edinbourgh, where he was executed.
